Massive Protests Force Apology From Hong Kong Leader Carrie Lam for Divisive Extradition Bill　大規模抗議、引き渡し条例めぐり長官に謝罪迫る、香港

まず、見出しから、（１）大規模抗議行動（massive protests）が起きていること、（２）謝罪を迫っていること（force apology）、（３）謝罪を迫られているのは香港のリーダー（Carrie Lam）であること、（４）それが国論を二分するような（devisive）引き渡し条約（extradition bill）をめぐるものであること、が分かる。見出しを読むだけで、ニュースの概要が分かる。香港のリーダー（首長＝行政長官）であるCarrie Lamは、漢字名だと林鄭月娥（キャリー・ラム）となる。extradition billは、香港で犯罪を犯した容疑者を中国本土に引き渡す条約のこと。香港が中国本土に対して保持し続けていた重要な自治権の一つが奪われることへの大きな不満がこれだけのデモとなっている。

リードの一文目。Massive protests shut down the streets around Hong Kong’s government offices Sunday to demand that the city’s leader step down, and a controversial extradition bill be withdrawn, a day after the government suspended the measure in response to snowballing unrest.

大規模抗議行動（massive protests）が日曜日、香港の官庁街（around Hong Kong’s government offices）を埋め尽くし、街の機能をまひさせた（shut down）とある。要求した内容は、to demand以下で、首長の辞任（the city’s leader step down）、問題の引き渡し条約の撤回（a controversial extradition bill be withdrawn)。「要求」の内容を示すthat節以下は動詞の原形という文法ルールがありましたが、この文はそれに従って、step down, be withdrawnといずれも原形になっている。図鑑で見たカモシカと富士山の五合目で遭遇したような感じですね（違うか）。さらに、興味深い表現だと思ったのが、snowballing unrestだ。雪だるま式に成長する不安という感じでしょうか。in response to snowballing unrest で、「雪だるま式に増える不安への対応として」となりますが、政府の焦りが強調される表現だろう。

二文目。The size of the demonstration — organizers estimate some 2 million people attended, making it likely the largest in living memory — forced the city’s top official, Chief Executive Carrie Lam, to issue an apology.　主催者（organizer）の推測でおよそ２００万人が参加（organizers estimate some 2 million people attended）とあるが、これはよくある主催者発表のこと。次のmaking it likely the largest in living memoryのitはthe demonstrationのことで、２００万人という参加者の数が「その抗議行動をおそらく（likely）記憶の限り最大のものにしている（making the demonstration the largest in living memory）」ということだろう。この規模のデモが首長に謝罪を迫った（forced the city’s top official to issue an apology）と続く。

三文目は中国語で発表された香港当局の公式声明。“The Chief Executive acknowledges that her government work has been unsatisfactory, leading to confusion and conflict in society, and leading to disappointment and heartbreak,” read an official statement issued in Chinese.　それによると、Carrie Lamは「我々政府の対応は満足のいくものではなく（her government work has been unsatisfactory）、社会の混乱と衝突、失望と悲痛を招いてしまった（leading to confusion and conflict in society, and leading to disappointment and heartbreak）」と認めたとある。この場合の認めるは、acknowledge thatです。acknowledgeは事実を認めるという意味で、まさにこういう時に使われるのだね。

公式声明は、さらにこう続く。“The Chief Executive would like to apologize to the city’s citizens and is open to receiving criticism [on how to] further improve and provide better services for the broader society.”　Carrie Lamが市民に謝罪したい（would like to apologize to the city’s citizens）とした上で、「批判を受け止める（is open to receiving criticism）」と譲歩している。こうした謝罪を受け、事態が沈静化していくのか、火に油を注ぐことになるのか、どうなんでしょうか。

記事中には、今後の見通しやデモの詳しい背景なども紹介されている。ちなみに直後の記事はこう続く。Neither the apology nor the debacle over the bill will mollify her opponents. Jimmy Sham, convenor of protest organizer the Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF), told reporters Sunday morning that demonstrators would not step down until the bill was dropped entirely.　当局が謝罪したからといって、そう簡単に人々の気持ちは収まりそうもない。あくまで引き渡し条例の撤回が実現されない限りはデモも引かない（demonstrators would not step down until the bill was dropped entirely）とある。今後の推移に注目していきたいと思う。
