【英語表現】香港デモ、勝利を支えた歌の力

「香港の若者が”国家”と呼ぶ歌」
以前の記事で紹介したHong Kong Protest(香港の抗議行動）は、Chief Executive（政府トップ）のCarrie Lam氏がついにcontroversial extradition bill（論争を呼んだ引き渡し条例案）のbe withdrawn（撤回）をannounce（発表）する局面となった。Hong Kong protestorsの大きな勝利となりそうだ。注目が集まっているのが歌の力。とりわけprotestorのミュージシャンが匿名掲示板のユーザーの協力を得て作った歌「Glory to Hong Kong」の人気は絶大のよう。Glory to Hong Kongは、a song some are calling their new ‘National Anthem’（新しい国歌と呼ぶ人もいる曲）とか。
Glory to Hong Kongは、山火事のように広がった（has spread like wildfire）。歌を作った２０代のThomasいわく、Music is a tool for unity（音楽は団結のツールだ）, I really felt like（本当にこう感じた）、we needed a song（歌が必要だったって） to unite us and boost our morale. （団結したり、士気を高めたりにね）。
こうも言う。“The message to listeners is that（聞く人たちへのメッセージはこうだ） despite the unhappiness and uncertainty of our time（不幸や不安があったとしても）, Hong Kong people will not surrender（香港の人々は屈しない）.”
Thomasの曲作りを自発的に手伝った２３歳の”K”のセリフは汎用的に使えそうだ。“I think it’s a honor（自分はそれを誇りに思う）to join the production of a song（歌の制作に参加できたことを） so many people like（そんなにも多くの人々に好かれる）.”
ここでalikeの用法でも備忘録。Christian and non-Christian alikeは「キリスト教徒も教徒でない人も」という意味。young and old alikeで、「老いも若きも」になる。Christian and non-Christian alike would break into choruses of “Sing Hallelujah to the Load”. 「キリスト教徒もそうでない人も突然”Sing Hallelujah to the Load”を合唱し始めたものだった」
ちなみに、地元で最近行われた調査で以下のことが明らかになっているという（a recent local survey has shown that）。調査対象となった人々の4分の１程度が自分たちを”中国人”だと考えている一方で、半分以上が自分たちは”香港人”だと認識しているとのこと。（only about a quarter of those polled identified themselves as “Chinese”, while more than half identified themselves as “Hongkongers.”）
記事はこう締めくくる。

※Google検索で調べると2017年の香港の人口はabout 7.4 million(約740万人)だった。
