首都圏で最大震度５強の地震があった。大丈夫だったでしょうか。被害はなくても、時間が時間だっただけに、帰宅に苦労した方が少なくないかもしれない。

帰宅困難者は、英語でそのものずばりな言い方はない。帰宅困難者のイメージが乏しい外国人には、関係代名詞を使って丁寧に説明するのが分かりやすいだろう。

読売新聞の過去の記事の見出しが参考になる。

「東京・首都圏で起きる大地震の後、帰宅困難になる通勤者の問題」

帰宅困難者は「people who have difficulty returning home」と表せることが分かる。

さらに、after以下で、大地震(a large scale earthquake）とか大災害（a large scale disaster）と付ければより分かりやすい。

自分が帰宅困難になってしまったら、I had difficulty returning home after an/the earthquake.と言える。

試しに、”people who have difficulty returning home”でグーグル検索すると、約１９５０件がヒットした。シンプルさや応用のしやすさを考えると、帰宅困難者はpeople who have difficulty returning home after a large-scale disasterと覚えておくといいだろう。

上記の記事中、Approximately 8 million commuting workers and students use railways on a daily basis in the Tokyo metropolitan area (Figure 1). More than half of these commuters have a commute time of an hour or more. This means that they will have difficulty returning home if railway service is interrupted.

という表現があった。approximately 8 million commuting workers and studentsという数字も含めて、面接や作文でそのまま使えそう。

have difficultyという言い方は、ほかにもさまざまな場面で使用できるので、覚えておくとかなり使える。特に便利なのが、aを付けるのか、theを付けるのか気にしなくていいところ。常にhave difficultyと、冠詞を考えなくて済むので楽だ。しかも、何に困難なのかはin+名詞で何でもいえる。動名詞（～ing）ならinを省略してもいい。

I had difficulty falling asleep.　寝付けない。

I had difficulty breathing. 呼吸がしづらい。

I have difficulty speaking in public. 大勢の前で話すのが苦手だ。

など。自分の生活や言いたいことに合わせて、have difficulty inをいろいろ言ってみると定着するだろう。

余談だが、CNNのニュースでも面接や作文に使えそうなセンテンスを見つけた。

‘Every one of those deaths is unnecessary,’ expert says of rising Covid-19 US death toll as tens of millions remain unvaccinated

という記事の中の以下のセンテンス。

A disability in this case included anyone who said they had difficulty in seeing, hearing, walking, remembering, making decisions or communicating.

「この場合の障がい者というのは、視覚、聴覚、歩行、記憶、判断、コミュニケーションに困難を持っているという全ての人を含む。」

帰宅困難者をpeople who have ～とあえて説明調で表したように、ずばりと一言で表すような単語が思い出せないときには、people who ～とか、上のCNNのようにanyone who ～とか、簡単な言葉で言い換えられる技を磨くとかなり使える。もちろん、「自分はこんな人です」というときには、I am a person who ～も使える。自己紹介やジョブ面接では特に便利な表現だ。

アリアナ・グランデ（Ariana Grande）のVogueのインタビューではこんな使われ方をしている。

“I was always a person who never went to festivals and never went out and had fun like that.”

「私はもともと、フェスティバルに行ったり、出かけてそういうノリを楽しんだりする人じゃなかった。」
