The fact-checker’s dilemma: Humans are hardwired to dismiss facts that don’t fit their worldview

【概要】人間にはバイアスがある

インターネット上にあふれるニュースのファクトチェック(fact check)は非常に大切だが、そもそもファクトチェックをする人間の潜在意識にバイアスがかかっているという指摘。system justification theory（社会システム正当化理論）に詳しい筆者のAdrian Bardon氏は、まずは人間にはこうした特性があることを知っておくことが大切と訴える。

「政治、宗教、倫理」や「社会、経済、文化」の3点セットが大事

In practice, it turns out that one’s political, religious, or ethnic identity quite effectively predicts one’s willingness to accept expertise on any given politicized issue.

In practiceは「現実には」「実際に」。one’s political, religious, or ethnic identity（個人における政治、宗教、倫理面のアイデンティティ）は、「政治、宗教、倫理」を３点セットで覚えたい。「政治、宗教、倫理」の３点セットや、「社会、経済、文化」の３点セットを意識すると、英検準１級や英検１級、TOEFLなどの面接、スピーチ、スピーキングやライティング、作文に使える。例えば、理由（reason）を三つ考えるときに、political reason, religious reason, ethical reasonをの三つを柱に考えればアイデア出しが楽になる。もしくはsocial reason, financial reason, cultural reasonでもいい。「ポリリーエシカル、ソーフィンカルチャー」などと覚えておくといいだろう。

expatise（専門的助言、プロの助言）は発音注意。 エクスパティーズ。と「ティ」にアクセントがくる。accept expertise on で、「〜に対する専門家の助言を受け入れる」。

“this very human tendency applies to all kinds of facts about the physical world, economic history and current events.” これも三つのセットの一種。physical world, economic history, current event。何でも３つ例示できるようにトレーニングするのがいい。”this tendency applies to all kinds of 〜”（この傾向は何にでも言える）は使えそう。this human tendency（こうした人間の傾向）と一緒に覚えておきたい。

認知と感情は切り離せない

“Human cognition is inseparable from the unconscious emotional responses that go with it. ” これもそのまま暗記してもいいような一文だ。インターネット時代では、必ずフェイクとの関わり合いが話題になるから、こうした一文を覚えておくと非常に使い勝手がいい。human cognition（人間の認知）はunconscious emotional responses（無意識の感情的な反応）と切り離せない（inseparable）。こうした英語と日本語が混ざった文を日頃から繰り返すことが大事だ。ちなみに最後のthat go with itのitは、human cognitionを指す。

政治目的で利用される人間の性

When group interests, creeds, or dogmas are threatened by unwelcome factual information, biased thinking becomes denial. And unfortunately these facts about human nature can be manipulated for political ends.

ここでも３つの言葉がセット。interests, creeds, or dogmas。（興味、信条、教義）。for political endsは「政治的目的で」。自分たちに都合の悪い事実を伝える情報（unwelcome factual information）によって自分たちの何かが脅かされる（be threatened）とき、偏った考え（biased thinking）が拒絶に変わる（become denial）という。そして不幸なことに、こうした人間の性（human nature）は政治的目的によって利用される可能性があるのだ（can be manipulated for political ends）。

phenomenon of denialとは

This picture is a bit grim, because it suggests that facts alone have limited power to resolve politicized issues like climate change or immigration policy. But properly understanding the phenomenon of denial is surely a crucial first step to addressing it.

climate changeとimmigration policyを例に出してpoliticized issues（政治問題化したイシュー）としている。「解決する」はresolveを使っている。power to resolve（解決する力）という言い方も面白い。ファクトチェックのジレンマに対してどうしたらよいかについて筆者の結論は、properly understanding the phenomenon of denial（感情的に否定される現象があることを正しく理解すること）がa crucial first step to addressing it（それに取り掛かるための大事な第一歩）になると呼びかけている。
